Cathy Carr and her husband, John, were living in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas when he was diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer and chronic obstructive pulmondary disease, or COPD. For his treatment the pair drove an hour and a half each way to Little Rock weekly.
It soon became apparent the drive was not sustainable and took a toll on both Cathy and John, so they spoke with his oncologist about other options. His physician suggested they look at Clearview Cancer Institute’s Dr. Philip McGee in Huntsville, Alabama. Although the two had never been to Alabama they made the trip, met Dr. McGee, and explored the city. They were instantly convinced.
John went on to be a patient of Dr. McGee’s for the next five years and Cathy was his caregiver every step of the way. After seeing volunteer signs during one of John’s appointments Cathy knew she wanted to be involved.
Cathy’s Time Volunteering
Even after John went into hospice, Cathy continued to volunteer weekly with her partner, Joany. Their friendship and connection pours into all of the patients they interact with. Cathy’s favorite part about volunteering is getting to know patients and their stories. She says her goal is to put a smile on every patient’s face.
