Receiving a cancer diagnosis can be a daunting and overwhelming experience for anyone. It’s a time when patients and their families need support and guidance more than ever. This is where nurse navigators come in. Nurse navigators are healthcare professionals who specialize in helping cancer patients navigate the complex healthcare system and manage the challenges of cancer treatment.
At Clearview Cancer Institute, every doctor has a dedicated nurse navigator.
“Nurse navigators work with patients from the time of diagnosis, throughout their cancer journey, and even after treatment is complete,” said Shannon Shaver, Director of Nursing at Clearview Cancer Institute. “Our nurse navigators serve as a point of contact and a source of support for patients and their families, offering guidance and education on various aspects of the cancer journey.”
One of the most important roles of a nurse navigator is to help patients navigate the healthcare system. They help patients understand their diagnosis and treatment plan, and connect them with the right resources and specialists. Nurse navigators also coordinate care between different healthcare providers, ensuring that patients receive comprehensive, personalized care.
“I am grateful for the one-on-one time I’m able to spend with my patients in this role. The time is built into the appointment time, which allows us to truly focus on the patients’ needs and assess whether additional resources may be beneficial,” said Shaton Kelly, nurse navigator for Dr. John Waples.
Another important role of nurse navigators is to provide emotional support to patients and their families. They offer a listening ear, answer questions, and provide reassurance and encouragement. Nurse navigators are also trained to recognize signs of distress in patients and can refer them to counseling or support groups as needed.
In addition, nurse navigators help patients manage the practical aspects of cancer treatment, such as scheduling appointments, arranging transportation, and coordinating insurance coverage. They can also provide guidance on nutrition, exercise, and other lifestyle factors that can help support patients during treatment. “At Clearview, I work closely with the social work department. Every physician has a dedicated social worker who helps facilitate rides, financial support and emotional support for patients. The system is set up to fully encompass the patients’ needs.”
Research has shown that nurse navigation can improve patient outcomes, including reducing hospital readmissions, improving patient satisfaction, and increasing adherence to treatment plans. “Our nurse navigators have proven vital to the continued health of our patients,” said Shaver. “We want our patients to call us first, before heading to the emergency department. Often times the nurse navigators are able to coordinate with their physician in order to address their symptoms or get a visit schedule at the clinic.”
At CCI, nurse navigators play a vital role in helping cancer patients navigate the complex healthcare system and manage the challenges of cancer treatment. They provide education, support, and coordination of care, helping patients and their families feel more informed and empowered throughout the cancer journey.
